This Fall in our Visual Art 9 drawing unit, we are thrilled to take part in a Global initiative, titled, 'The Memory Project'. This is a charitable nonprofit organization that invites art students to create portraits for youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as neglect, abuse, loss of parents, violence, and extreme poverty. While developing new art skills, our students will also be practicing kindness, and global awareness. As three art 9 classes, we will be sent photos of fifty-five Syrian children currently residing in a refugee camp on the Jordan Border. Between our three classes, we will work on these children’s portraits as the major project of our first term. Upon completion of the artwork, classes will then receive a video of the children receiving their portraits in the New year. While ‘The Memory Project’ itself is nonprofit, there is a small fee of $15 per student that covers the cost of organization, as well as distribution of portraits to the children. A portion of this cost also goes to the Syrian Children. Collingwood is excited about your undertaking, and will cover this fee. YOUR CRITERIA: You will be given a photo of a Syrian child, which you will use as inspiration for your first major drawing project. We want the portraits to help the children feel valued and important, to know that many people care about their well-being, and to act as meaningful pieces of personal history in the future. The drawing must be a clear visual representation of the child you receive. There should be a definite resemblance to the facial proportions in the photo.
Below is the list of skill-building “boot camps” we covered in class. These will be used in the evaluation process:
Getting Started: 1) Research! 'Pin' at least 20 examples of portraits that appeal to you (various medium, styles, techniques) that you might like to try . CLICK HERE to see the Portrait board Ms. Underwood and I have put together on Pinterest. 2) Pin at least 5 drawing tutorials that might be helpful to you personally (is there a medium that we haven't covered that you'd like to try? find a tutorial and pin it!) 3)In your sketchbook create 3 thumbnail sketches illustrating your composition and how you plan to work the background. Consider your layout and materials that will be used. Experiment with materials in your sketchbook first (use your practice grid face as a place to experiment with various materials / techniques) 4) Prep your paper. Do your edges need taping? Do you need to figure out grid proportions? Do you need to stain your page? 5) Grid your original image (make sure it is proportionate to your drawing surface) 6) Begin For a reminder of the Syrian Conflict affecting these refugee children BBC http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-26116868 Aljazeera http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/07/syrian-refugees-suffering-jordan-border-160721024521992.html
