The Following is an outline of our first unit. It is subject to change, but will give you a rough idea of the direction we are headed / and or lessons you may have missed, or need to catch up on.
Day 1: Observational Contour Drawing Homework: Weebly Construction (see blog post one) Day 2: Exercise- Collaged Contour Face (using blind contour technique) Day 3: Collaged Face Day 2 - Adding Value (A lesson in value using Prismacolour) Day 4: Using Value to achieve form (experiment with graphite, charcoal, conte, china marker) Day 5: Composition/Space- Creating a unified image Day 6: Creating a Focal Point- A lesson in emphasis (using colour, contrast, placement) Days 7-13: Design, Create, a mixed media portrait of a partner using Contour Line as your starting point. You are encouraged to experiment with various materials and mediums, and work intuitively, layering, and enjoying the process.
Steps: (Take pictures and document your process, you will use these images for a blog post) 1. RESEARCH: Find an artist you admire, who's work incorporates mixed media -create a blog post, including at least one example of this artist's work, and following writing prompts that will be given in class 2. DESIGN /BRAINSTORM: What approaches might you take? What layers might your piece entail? Homework: Create a pinterest board of useful images (images that incorporate your chosen medium, artists that inspire you or who work along a similar theme, examples of contour drawings etc. ) **MINIMUM 20 PINS** 3. MATERIAL EXPLORATION: Experiment with, and choose your materials. A DAY of PLAY! ( 1 Day) - Fill at least 2 pages in your sketchbook, experimenting with contour drawing, various materials, washes etc.
4. TIME TO BEGIN: Start by prepping your paper. Will you use a wash? A textured background? Coloured paper? Anything goes! Next, using the paper you've prepared, complete 3-6 overlapping Contour drawings of your partner. Use close observation, so that your drawings resemble the sitter. What medium will you choose for these drawings? Now, begin to add Value. What materials will you use? What areas of your drawing should you place emphasis on? 5. Keep going. Focus on the process, and have fun with it!
